User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Excellent basic licks book
I disagree with the individual that rated this book as a run of the mill licks book. I have a lot of licks books, too, and this one is definitely better than most. Artie’s material, while mostly basic, is very useful in that it shows how even basic licks, when used tastefully, can make for excellent music. Most lick books just present static licks that may or may not have any relation to one another. Artie puts this material together in a way you can use musically and build on it to create your own music. My only criticism is that he goes through it all pretty quickly and it’s sometimes hard to tell exactly where he is in the tab, but that’s pretty minor. This book is really great when used along with Happy and Artie’s Jam Along Blues dvd’s. This book/dvd is definietly the best one I have for overall usefulness musically.

5 Stars Great Book!!
I’ve been playing for about four years, and I found this book and CD incredibly helpful. No fluff or unecessary information. Artie Traum has a gentle and non-egotistical style, and he explains the riffs simply and thoughtfully and then plays them. I read along in the book, then stopped the CD and played them myself. I found the riffs fun and even more fun when I could use the “building blocks” to build my own riffs. I highly recommend the book, especially considering the low price.

2 Stars Just Another Riff Book
I have about seven years on the guitar and am always looking for new material to study. I ordered this book, flipped through it a few times, and put it on the shelf with about twenty other books that cover the exact same ground. Just your generic, run-of-the-mill, riff collection. The majority of the riffs are just scale runs in different keys! I suppose if you’re just getting started and looking for blues/rock ideas this may work (though there are thousands of these types of books out there).

5 Stars This is a must have for beginning to advanced guitar
Artie does an excellent job in giving a blue collar description of essential guitar riffs for the acoustic guitar. I got a great deal out of it and I have been playing for 23 years. Well worth the investment. CD comes with it and helps the learning process greatly. A++

Key to being an interesting guitarist is having a wide “vocabulary” of chords, riffs, and rhythm ideas.

Do you pick up the guitar and just play the same old things? Do your fingers just wander in old familiar paths, and you feel bored with your playing?

Would you like to …

* Save $1000′s in private lessons, and learn at your own pace – playing back the examples as you like?

* Expand your vocabulary beyond the same old major and minor chords?

* Improve your own songs with more interesting harmony?

* Break out of your old positions, and come up with expressive rhythm guitar parts?

* Learn what a G7b9#5 chord is, how it sounds, and when you should use it? How about a Db7b5? A G13sus4? A C mu-major?! The list goes on….

This is not only a perfect reference for guitarists, but is also a series of lessons – and after you order here, contact us with your purchase receipt at joedocmusic dot com for the full version with audio!

This item was purchased as a gift and was well recieved. It is very thorough and extremely helpful. The order was filled promply.

3 Stars Diagrams are backwards
There are a lot of fretboard diagrams in this book. In contrast to every other book I’ve seen, they are all drawn as though you were looking at the guitarist, i.e., the nut is to the right. This makes them nearly indecipherable.

The book doesn’t cost much, especially if you get it used, and it has some nice tips for the beginner. There’s no depth at all, though, and there’s a lot better information available for free on the web.

4 Stars Great beginner’s resource
In common with many gigging guitarists I keep a copy of Phil Capone’s Guitar Chord Bible permanently in my guitar case, so I was interested to see he had written a new book. In it he takes a step backwards and addresses the guitarist who is learning to play the instrument. Although familiar with all the techniques he describes, I can’t help thinking that I could have saved myself a lot of trouble if I’d had this book twenty years ago. The chord and scale libraries at the back of the book are useful (although Capone’s Chord Bible, mentioned above, is really unbeatable in this regard) and the included CD ensures that the student reader can hear what the material taught in the lessons should sound like when played correctly. All in all, this is a good package, and one I shall recommend to my students.
