Welcome to The “Next Stage” Guitar Book! This guitar book contains a simple learning method that will help you master the skill of playing basic musical scales quickly and easily without having to learn anything about music theory if you don’t want too. Most of the scales presented are Major Scales, the familiar Do-Re-Me-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do that most of us have heard since childhood. The last half of the book will introduce you to the Pentatonic Scales (Major & Minor) and everyone’s favorite – “The Blues Scale”. The mateial presented is designed so you will not be overwhelmed with more scales and information than you need to know at this early stage of your musical development.

The material will be presented in three parts; Part I will cover single octave Major Scales. Part II will expand on Part I to cover double octave Major Scales. Part III will introduce you to the Pentatonic and Blues Scale. Each new scale is presented along with an accompanying (1) “Scale Path” diagram, (2) “Standard Music Notation” and (3) “Tablature” for that particular scale. If you like, you may record the scales you are learning and play them back periodically to monitor your progress. You will discover that by playing and memorizing these scales, you are preparing yourself for more advance scales and musical concepts.

Knowledge is power, and once you unlock the “secret” to playing scales, you can create your own phrasings and melodic patterns. You will find much more than described above in this new guitar book! On another note, you might also want to get a copy of The “First Stage” Guitar Book – Learn How To Play Guitar Easily & Quickly!, you will find this book very helpful in learning guitar chords in clear, bold and easy to understand illustrations plus more. Also there is a handy quick reference chord chart that you might want to include in your “how to play guitar” reference case called The “First Stage” Guitar Chord Chart – Learn How To Play The Most Commonly Played Guitar Chords!

Most of all the patterns in this book are moveable and has made my lead guitar playing more exciting. Also we have found out that these patterns can also be used on the bass guitar as well.

4 Stars Music Library “Must Have”…..
This is a great follow-up to Chris Lopez’ “First Stage” guitar book for beginners. I am in the transition stage; going from beginner to intermediate in my playing and not only do I take lessons one hour per week, but I also go back to these books for the basics. They are easy to follow, and will help you remember the basics of playing that guitar….

The best guitar tutorial I’ve seen-excellent chord charts are easy to use, with logical progression that make it easy to locate desired chord. Simple and straight forward.

5 Stars A Fantastic Way To Learning How To Play Scale Patterns
It’s hard to believe that learning scale patterns could be made so easy. The “Next Stage” Guitar Book is great. It also includes easy to understand tabs and standard notation. What a great deal and savings on private lessons. A Must Get!

5 Stars Picks up where the “First Stage” book left off
This book continues to present the need to know, nuts and bolts information that’s necessary to play the guitar. This second book builds on the first by introducing the reader to scales and how to play the scales from many different positions on the fretboard. There’s enough info in this book to keep a person busy for a long, long time, but again it’s given in an easy to comprehend format that seeks not to confuse, but to provide a practical, down to earth guide to making some music with your guitar. Don’t miss out on this unique book.

4 Stars The Right Stuff for beginning guitarists…
This book is excellent for beginning to intermediate acoustic guitarists 10 yrs. old and up. It’s not the be-all and end-all, but does the job quite nicely. I’ve been using it to teach 3rd to 10th grade students privately for about 2 years now. It is a little light on teaching how to read the treble clef, but the tab explanations are clear. It has very good examples on the CD’s also, which should definitely be part of the learning process.

5 Stars awesome book!
i went into this book knowing most of the things he talks about but i still learned a lot from his method. he teaches you to play and sing along, which drastically improves your playing ability. although the concepts discussed are simple, there is a lot of basic stuff covered that you need to know as a guitar player, such as chord progressions.

the biggest advantage to this book is the play and learn method. if you’re just after theory, “try play guitar in ten easy lessons”.

4 Stars Let’s Play the guitar
A practical, simple, and effective method to learn or develop techniques to play the acoustic guitar ithout the need of an instructor.

4 Stars Not bad
Not bad. Starts simple and builds as you go along. Overall, if you’re looking for a teach-yourself book, this one is not a bad place to start.

5 Stars The next best thing to lessons
I’ve strummed my acoustic guitar since the heyday of the Kingston Trio, briefly taking lessons, and plowing through Lord knows how many “easy guitar method” books.

But only after I stumbled onto Hamburger’s book did I really begin to play. His common sense explanations, practice exercises and recorded examples–played a tempo and then slow–have given me confidence. While his lessons are basic, the text is rooted in serious musicianship and musical theory, and does not insult my intelligence as an experienced choral singer.

I’ve learned more from Hamburger’s book in a a few weeks than I had in

40 years.

3 Stars Good Place to Start
I bought this book about three months ago and although it is a good place to get started, it does have a few mistakes. I’m now taking lessons and have learned that a few of the chord patterns in the book are inaccurate and/or wrong. For example, the book shows the correct finger pattern for an “A” major chord but does not omit the 6th string (open “E” note) from the chord diagram, thus leading you to believe the note should be played as part of the chord. My intructor corrected me the first time I played the chord. The mistake appears to be a simple publishing error but of course you can’t know this if you are a beginner like myself. All things considered, the book was helpful in getting started and I was able to learn a few helpful chords before my lessons began. If you purchase this book, and are not familiar with how each chord is formulated, I would recommend veryfing the finger patterns against another source before you become too comfortable playing the chords.

5 Stars 40+ guitar beginner
This was the first book I used to get started from scratch. The reason I like it is that it has NO songs, so it took the pressure off having to learn a song, yet the 4 chord sequences sound quite good (according to my wife). It includes barre chords, but also alterative figuring to barre chords, so you can learn them slowly/progresively without pressure. The other book a bought (for songs) is “The Complete Guitarist” by Russ Shipton

3 Stars OK
This book is better suited for people who already know guitar basics. You shouldn’t play chords if you’re not comfortable playing notes

5 Stars The First Stage Guitar Book
Better than I anticipated. I had expected the original version. What I received is a newer version which has been revised and updated: contains more pages with more examples, chord structures, and narrative.

Very, very nice.

2 Stars Good as a companion to another method
This is primarily a book on chord progressions. Starting with the most popular chords used in music, and then moving to other chords in open in barre position. Interspersed here and there are some tips on playing guitar. Not much more than that, and not very well organized.

I would consider this most beneficial as a companion to lessons or to a complete method found elsewhere. There just isn’t much to it. It’s 80 pages, but each page generally contains two 4-chord progressions. I also found that several of the chords listed are inaccurate — or at least inconsistent with several other sources I checked them against.

I’ve used about 6 different books and software on learning the guitar, and I found this to be the least helpful. But there are some great reference diagrams that I still refer to, and as it is entirely focused on popular progressions, it finds a home being used in conjunction with another book.

5 Stars GREAT
I took guitar lessons for many years and with many instructors. I wish this had been available back then. It is the easiest and most comprehensive way to learn to play.

1 Star Lower than I expected
I expected a package that teaches how to play guitar. However, they put all their focus on marketing the guitar itself than teaching. It is very difficult to see the hand movement and there are times that hand movement are not shown at all.

5 Stars Very pleased!
I am a TOTAL beginner and have tried to learn using another guidebook and dvd. I learned more from this DVD in 5 minutes than I did in several chapters of the other instructional book and DVD. He has an easy going style that makes learning from him easy and he teaches you the basics you need to know to get started actually playing. It was exactly what I hoped for since I am a visual learner. I felt discouraged from the other book/DVD, but not with this one. Now I’m just waiting to develop the lovely callouses I so dearly need so practicing will be more comfortable. I love Spanish classical guitar music so I am an eager student to learn this style of guitar.

5 Stars Esteban is excellent
I don’t have this particular one, but I have the 5 dvd set that came with master class package. I own over a dozen other learn guitar dvds and Esteban is by far the best. I’m very new (been playing almost 6 months) and have gotten so much better then what I was in just the month i’ve owned the dvd’s. His exercises for running scales and his picking technique put me miles ahead of where I was. When I started playing, one of the songs I really wanted to learn how to do was Yes “meet all good people” and have been failing miserably at it since the beginning. Last night I actually got through it for the first time! Still had a few problems changing cords (but hey I’m new) picking the beginning however was flawless using the techniques I learned from Esteban. I haven’t sat down and practiced with a few friends that play in about a month, but the next time I do these guys are gonna freak out. The progess i’ve made with this technique is really great. Considering some of the othere dvd’s i’ve purchased got 4 and 5 stars in review. Esteban deserves a much higher rateing. This guy far outclasses them by a wide margin.

5 Stars Esteban’s Complete Guitar Course for Beginners
I know that some of the reviews that were given by some of the people that were self proclaimed guitar virtuosos. Basically were saying oh he isn’t that good and one guy even comments that he messes up on one of the scales and that they were to cheap to edit it out. Well I order this course anyway and have found that it is quite good and he appears to be an exellent teacher and have found it quite enjoyable. I believe he may have left in the one mistake(maybe to show some humillity?)to show that even someone who has played for many years can still make a mistake so as a student do not give up trying. I believe if you just learn half of what he has to offer its well worth it and you may become a fine player. If he was to release more I would buy them.

2 Stars “Teach Yourself how to play Pink Floyd”
I’m an intermediate guitarist and I wanted to actually LEARN how to play David Gilmore’s solos. The guitarist in this video has tremendous skill and plays beautifully, unfortunately he understands nothing of teaching someone how to play guitar.

Jamie whizzes through the lesson, rolling through it as if you already know the material and fingering. There is little attempt made to stop, take a moment, and really show you what he’s doing, rather he rolls through it and you are unable to keep up because you can’t watch what he’s doing and find your fingering at the same time.

Totally frustrating in my opinion, but most guitar instructional videos are the same way.

If you want to learn how to play Pink Floyd you’re going to need the tableature. If you already know it and want to refine your technique then this is perfect for you. I have to teach myself everything once again, and THEN go back and improve my technique with this video.

So if you’re new to guitar, don’t bother, its just too fast.

4 Stars Pretty good
I bought this after i bought the Nate Lapointe “Dark side of the moon”. I like Pink Floyd and I wanted to learn some of the stuff on the guitar. I give Nate’s Dvd a 4 also neither came with tabs and neither came with a book. The teaching styles of both guys are pretty good with a slight nod to Nate. He goes slower and it is alot easier for a beginner to keep up with. Be prepared to use the “rewind” button on your dvd player alot. But once you get the songs down these are great dvd’s. Both of them. All i can say is I want more floyd from either one or both of these guys.

5 Stars Nothing but Pink Floyd!
Although I am at best a novice electric guitar player, I am finding (still making my way through it) this instructional DVD very exceptional. Several sections take more work and much repeating, but very possible with practice. With luck, I will have completed the disc and will be feeling much more comfortable with most of the songs that Jamie Humphries covers. Highly recommend for anyone that wants to make some effort in learning the songs contained on this DVD and plays guitar at a novice or higher level.

4 Stars Learn the songs you love!
As an intermediate guitar player, I’ve always found the music books and the on-line video lessons didn’t have that personal and hand’s on touch that most of us need. With the Learn to Play video, I was able to watch. learn and play at my own speed. The lessons are clear, thorough and very helpful. thanks to the backing tracks included I can jam along and imagine the giant pig flying over my head at a Pink Floyd concert!
