Comb-bound electric slide guitar instruction book and CD.

TAB – STANDARD NOTATION – CD

This superb electric slide book teaches how to play open tuning slide guitar with a blues band and singer. It is the only slide (or bottleneck) guitar instruction book devoted to learning how to play slide behind a blues vocalist.

The term slide guitar refers to a style of playing in which the guitar strings are fretted with a piece of metal, glass or ceramic. Usually, the fretting device is a finger sized cylinder (the slide) that is worn on either the third or fourth finger of the fretting hand. Bottleneck blues guitar players have been known to play bottleneck blues guitar with makeshift items such as knife blades, bones, and spoon handles.

Slide guitar is also known as bottleneck guitar or knife guitar. Slide guitar setup: A guitar used for slide playing is usually tuned to an open chord; the strings are raised at the nut to accommodate the pressure of the slide.

A fill-in is a lead guitar lick played behind a singer. This slide guitar guide teaches 101 authentic slide guitar fill-ins in open E tuning. Songs are presented in a way that makes learning efficient, enjoyable, and pertinent to real music.

For your convenience, all of the songs are performed in open E tuning, allowing you to jam with the entire CD without having to retune. After absorbing the licks, apply them to songs of your own choice.

Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sporting Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, and several new songs based on standard blues changes.

4 Stars The Right Stuff for beginning guitarists…
This book is excellent for beginning to intermediate acoustic guitarists 10 yrs. old and up. It’s not the be-all and end-all, but does the job quite nicely. I’ve been using it to teach 3rd to 10th grade students privately for about 2 years now. It is a little light on teaching how to read the treble clef, but the tab explanations are clear. It has very good examples on the CD’s also, which should definitely be part of the learning process.

5 Stars awesome book!
i went into this book knowing most of the things he talks about but i still learned a lot from his method. he teaches you to play and sing along, which drastically improves your playing ability. although the concepts discussed are simple, there is a lot of basic stuff covered that you need to know as a guitar player, such as chord progressions.

the biggest advantage to this book is the play and learn method. if you’re just after theory, “try play guitar in ten easy lessons”.

4 Stars Let’s Play the guitar
A practical, simple, and effective method to learn or develop techniques to play the acoustic guitar ithout the need of an instructor.

4 Stars Not bad
Not bad. Starts simple and builds as you go along. Overall, if you’re looking for a teach-yourself book, this one is not a bad place to start.

5 Stars The next best thing to lessons
I’ve strummed my acoustic guitar since the heyday of the Kingston Trio, briefly taking lessons, and plowing through Lord knows how many “easy guitar method” books.

But only after I stumbled onto Hamburger’s book did I really begin to play. His common sense explanations, practice exercises and recorded examples–played a tempo and then slow–have given me confidence. While his lessons are basic, the text is rooted in serious musicianship and musical theory, and does not insult my intelligence as an experienced choral singer.

I’ve learned more from Hamburger’s book in a a few weeks than I had in

40 years.

This superb Red Dog Music Book and CD allows you to learn/play slide guitar fill-ins while sitting in with a crisply recorded blues band and singer. The licks are clearly written in standard notation and tablature, and the companion CD contains all 101 licks, which are applicable to countless blues songs. A guide to symbols and several helpful fretboard diagrams are included. The licks are recorded on electric guitar but can also be played on acoustic. Overall, a very fine book that will provide unlimited learning and enjoyment. Many slide guitar books are confusing because they try to cover too many tunings. Everything here is in open E. Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sportin Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, along with several new songs written to standard blues changes. Like Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutton, and Elmore James? Then you will like this book.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Good licks for real songs
I am a guitarist who has played in blues and rock bands and I have been working on slide guitar technique. I am very pleased with this book. Everything is here for anyone who wants to learn how to play blues slide guitar licks in the context of a blues band.

The licks are played in actual blues songs that follow standard chord progressions. I have already found ways to work the licks into songs by Muddy Waters, Elmore James, etc. Great book and I recommend it to others.

5 Stars back in print
This author had a similar book out with another publisher, but it is out of print, and quite expensive used. I understand that the author owns this publishing company, so I doubt if it will disappear. Good thing too. I have gone through three copies of the old book. They keep “disappearing”.

I teach people how to play slide, although I’m not at all scary doing it. This book is my secret weapon. It’s simple and all in one tuning, but not too simple. They (the licks) are what musicians call “solid”. By the time you work your way through the book, you hopefully have an ear, and trust me, that’s what slide requires. Then you play with the licks and make them your own. Most people have figured out where to go by the time they finish. I always recommend stealing solos from harmonica players when they get through this book. I’m glad it’s back.

5 Stars Like Sitting in With a Chicago Blues Band

I have been wanting to learn slide guitar for a long time. My teacher suggested this book and it is as helpful as he said it would be. The material is well-organized and includes everything a beginning slide player needs, including diagrams that serve as valuable roadmaps for open E tuning.

The slide licks sound just like the ones played by Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, Robert Nighthawk, and others on the classic blues records of the 1950s to mid 1960s. Some of the licks sound like Taj Mahal. The great thing is that a good blues band with a singer is playing model blues songs on the CD, so you are learning licks that you will actually be able to use in the blues songs you play. The singer on this CD is amazing-he sounds like Ray Charles.

I love that the entire book is arranged in the key of E. And the licks are smooth, tasteful, and accessible. The book gave me immediate confidence and familiarity with open E tuning. It is a lot of fun to play along with the CD – I feel like I’m sitting in with a blues band in a smoky bar on the Southside of Chicago. Very highly recommended.

5 Stars GREAT
I took guitar lessons for many years and with many instructors. I wish this had been available back then. It is the easiest and most comprehensive way to learn to play.

1 Star Lower than I expected
I expected a package that teaches how to play guitar. However, they put all their focus on marketing the guitar itself than teaching. It is very difficult to see the hand movement and there are times that hand movement are not shown at all.

I am a TOTAL beginner and have tried to learn using another guidebook and dvd. I learned more from this DVD in 5 minutes than I did in several chapters of the other instructional book and DVD. He has an easy going style that makes learning from him easy and he teaches you the basics you need to know to get started actually playing. It was exactly what I hoped for since I am a visual learner. I felt discouraged from the other book/DVD, but not with this one. Now I’m just waiting to develop the lovely callouses I so dearly need so practicing will be more comfortable. I love Spanish classical guitar music so I am an eager student to learn this style of guitar.

I don’t have this particular one, but I have the 5 dvd set that came with master class package. I own over a dozen other learn guitar dvds and Esteban is by far the best. I’m very new (been playing almost 6 months) and have gotten so much better then what I was in just the month i’ve owned the dvd’s. His exercises for running scales and his picking technique put me miles ahead of where I was. When I started playing, one of the songs I really wanted to learn how to do was Yes “meet all good people” and have been failing miserably at it since the beginning. Last night I actually got through it for the first time! Still had a few problems changing cords (but hey I’m new) picking the beginning however was flawless using the techniques I learned from Esteban. I haven’t sat down and practiced with a few friends that play in about a month, but the next time I do these guys are gonna freak out. The progess i’ve made with this technique is really great. Considering some of the othere dvd’s i’ve purchased got 4 and 5 stars in review. Esteban deserves a much higher rateing. This guy far outclasses them by a wide margin.

I know that some of the reviews that were given by some of the people that were self proclaimed guitar virtuosos. Basically were saying oh he isn’t that good and one guy even comments that he messes up on one of the scales and that they were to cheap to edit it out. Well I order this course anyway and have found that it is quite good and he appears to be an exellent teacher and have found it quite enjoyable. I believe he may have left in the one mistake(maybe to show some humillity?)to show that even someone who has played for many years can still make a mistake so as a student do not give up trying. I believe if you just learn half of what he has to offer its well worth it and you may become a fine player. If he was to release more I would buy them.
