I’m so glad that I ordered this DVD. I’ve been playing bass (self-taught) for a while now, and don’t have the time for real lessons; so this gives me the confidence that I needed to know what to do on the bass. It starts off basic and builds upon that foundation. Don’t rush ahead–take your time and you’ll be rocking along in no time flat. If you are looking for a great instructional video, then this is the one for you.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars “Teach Yourself how to play Pink Floyd”
I’m an intermediate guitarist and I wanted to actually LEARN how to play David Gilmore’s solos. The guitarist in this video has tremendous skill and plays beautifully, unfortunately he understands nothing of teaching someone how to play guitar.

Jamie whizzes through the lesson, rolling through it as if you already know the material and fingering. There is little attempt made to stop, take a moment, and really show you what he’s doing, rather he rolls through it and you are unable to keep up because you can’t watch what he’s doing and find your fingering at the same time.

Totally frustrating in my opinion, but most guitar instructional videos are the same way.

If you want to learn how to play Pink Floyd you’re going to need the tableature. If you already know it and want to refine your technique then this is perfect for you. I have to teach myself everything once again, and THEN go back and improve my technique with this video.

So if you’re new to guitar, don’t bother, its just too fast.

4 Stars Pretty good
I bought this after i bought the Nate Lapointe “Dark side of the moon”. I like Pink Floyd and I wanted to learn some of the stuff on the guitar. I give Nate’s Dvd a 4 also neither came with tabs and neither came with a book. The teaching styles of both guys are pretty good with a slight nod to Nate. He goes slower and it is alot easier for a beginner to keep up with. Be prepared to use the “rewind” button on your dvd player alot. But once you get the songs down these are great dvd’s. Both of them. All i can say is I want more floyd from either one or both of these guys.

5 Stars Nothing but Pink Floyd!
Although I am at best a novice electric guitar player, I am finding (still making my way through it) this instructional DVD very exceptional. Several sections take more work and much repeating, but very possible with practice. With luck, I will have completed the disc and will be feeling much more comfortable with most of the songs that Jamie Humphries covers. Highly recommend for anyone that wants to make some effort in learning the songs contained on this DVD and plays guitar at a novice or higher level.

4 Stars Learn the songs you love!
As an intermediate guitar player, I’ve always found the music books and the on-line video lessons didn’t have that personal and hand’s on touch that most of us need. With the Learn to Play video, I was able to watch. learn and play at my own speed. The lessons are clear, thorough and very helpful. thanks to the backing tracks included I can jam along and imagine the giant pig flying over my head at a Pink Floyd concert!

5 Stars Good teacher of the Blues
My husband is liking the Level 1 Blues guitar lessons so much that I’ve ordered the Level 2. He hasn’t started it yet, but if it’s as understandable as the level 1 then he’ll be happy.

5 Stars This teacher is the best you’ll find on DVD
This teacher is the best you’ll find on DVD buy this and buy all the house of blues instructional DVDs

2 Stars Not worth it…
Not very good at getting one to where they think this book will take them. Not very well organized. It is just another showcase for the artists that produced it… keep looking. It’s presentation suggest it’s all about them, not the wanna bee blues player. Not a quality item. I know, I have reviewed more than 40 such learning books in blues guitar. This one is not as effective as it should be.

5 Stars Learn to play the blues, Level 2, by John McCarthy
I started out with Learn to play the blues (Guitar) Level 1, by John McCarthy, & because of the excellent instruction methods used, with the follow along DVD, & the comparible booklet that came with the package, I decided to go ahead & purchase the Level 2 package. As yet I’m still on Level 1, which is really for beginner, blues , guitar players, but as I’m making good progress with the backing tracks, which can be dowloaded free from the membership access included in this package, I decided to buy the Level 2 as well. It is in my opinion, the best instruction method around, which normally cost 5 times as much. You will not regret this purchase.

4 Stars Can be a usefull tool.
The content of the DVD has a lot of excellent and usefull information. The problem was the resources they referenced such as the support/member websites made it very hard to navigate, which made it hard to register and find the supporting information.

5 Stars Great Beginner Blues Lessons
This is a great starting off point for those who want to learn the blues.

5 Stars House of Blues – Blues Guitar Level1
I was looking for sb to show me how to play lead blues guitar and I found exactly what I wanted.

No more secrets and above all very thoroughly thought of learning steps.

The teaching guy is sympathetic the double pictures extremely helpful.

I always know what I’m supposed to play (though ,many times it doesn’t at all work in the first place . . !).

Happily I practise and practise – looking forward to the fact that there is a Level2 Video when I’m good enough at the presented basics.

5 Stars Easy to understand…
My 74 year-old husband was longing to learn how to play the Blues on his guitar….it’s pretty easy for him now.

5 Stars SIMPLY THE BEST!
I have been playing guitar since 1983. For many years, I have been looking for an instructional device that will help me get to another level. Once I got past the firt couple of chapters that did not teach me anything new, the whole rest of it was EXACTLY what I have been looking for. For a beginner, the entire DVD is going to be a must. McCarthy is an excellent guitarist, who plays with a pleasant variety and doesn’t sound at all generic. The overall architecture of these lessons has been so well planned, that the end-user is taken on an easy and enjoyable learning path. It’s not exactly “the blues,” but it IS the BEST instructions for learning rock guitar, which is founded from the blues anyway. Definitely buy this series, it’s well worth every penny!

5 Stars You gotta get this dvd
This dvd is the ultimate way to learn everything about playing a guitar. You could not know what the neck of the guitar is but they teach you and its purposes. I have one myself i have to say it couldent get better.

3 Stars Not advanced enough
While the instructor seems knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic, the material itself may be disappointing for the advanced player. This was the case for me.

Advanced beginners and intermediate level players may benefit from this DVD. Maybe it’s just me, but I do not think that E and A barre-chord forms should be considered advanced material. The same applies to the minor and 7th chords shown. Advanced to me would be something like an Eb9#11 or F13b9 (I took these from Classic Guitar Styles of Duke Robillard).

The use of overdrive/distortion when practicing (or teaching) should be avoided, as it may conceal some problems with the technique(s) being used. IMO, practicing/teaching should be done with a clean sound, unless the “effects” are also part of the practice. For example, when developing a specific sound with distortion, delay, chorus, compression, etc.

Some exercises are just like the ones I used to do on my first or second year of guitar playing. They were really good for me as a beginner. They don’t add much to an advanced player.

Bi-dextral hammer-on sounded like an interesting technique. It is commonly known as “tapping” so again there was nothing new here.

There is an option to download a metronome and a tuner from their website, but Mac users are excluded since they don’t have versions of these programs for the Mac.

There is no theoretical explanation preceding the exercises. For example, what about mentioning what is an arpeggio or what notes are used for the Am arpeggio? Probably advanced players will already know this, though. Anyone familiar with Steve Vai’s duel in the movie Crossroads will already know about Am arpeggios

The camera sometimes focuses on places in the guitar neck where NOTHING is happening. For example, while playing a brief part from Ozzy/Randy’s Mr. Crowley, which by the way I play a bit differently. I haven’t listened to it in a while, but I’m pretty sure Randy also played it differently

Overall, I think John McCarthy is a very good teacher. I’m raising my rating from 2 to 3 stars because of that. I wish I had something like this when I was starting out. Labeling the DVD as and “Advanced Program” is very misleading, though. I would recommend it to an advanced beginner or intermediate-level player, but not for a truly advanced guitarist.

5 Stars great dvd
This is a great dvd , i have several of the rockhouse dvds and they are all good. This dvd teaches you some cool tricks and tips.I bought the whole set and love them.

Plenty in stock! Ignore the “1 used & new.” This video program is intended for beginner to intermediate students. You can download a free preview at http://Guitar-Music-Theory.com (copy and past this URL into your browser’s address bar). The Pentatonic Scale is one of the most common scales in all of popular music. It’s used to play melodies, riffs, lead guitar solos and bass lines. Other topics covered include covering the whole fretboard, major and minor tonalities, application, improvisation, theory and popular songs. This is a really good video for starting and intermediate guitarists. Fairly detailed and straight forward description on the Pentatonic as well as lots of fun new ideas on improvisation.

Good buy.

5 Stars Execellant DVD
This is a great video lesson of the minor and major pentatonic scales. This DVD will teach you the five patterns and how they tie together. Various techniques are also discussed to enhance the scales, as well as how to practice with rhythm backing tracks. I’ve purchased several lesson DVDs and his are among the best I’ve seen. You should not be disappointed if you want to learn the pentatonic scale. Desi is a talented teacher. I am very happy with my purchase.

Desi Serna videos are great….. period

I have always been a little intimidated to learn scales and patterns, but Desi broke it down to make even the greenest of beginners able to understand the pentatonic scales

Starts with pattern 1, and guides you through all five patterns, showing how each works with the other…. before long you will realize the whole fretboard just opened up, and scales start making sense.

You learn not only how to play the pentatonic scale … but why & when.. and adding notes for the blues and major scales
