User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars not so much
Sadly, this is not what i thought it was. If you know anything about guitaring, or even the basic chords, this is not for you. None of the songs are ones known, and it can be hard to catch the strumming on the practice songs.. Overall, not somthing iwould recommend

4 Stars Deceptively simple
This book is a bit misleading. There are no praise songs that you’ve ever heard in it. Instead, the author is using some simple praise songs to teach strumming technique and basic chords. It’s well worth working through all the exercises if you’re a beginner. Strumming is such an important skill and I find the author’s exercises really help build precision and timing.

A beginner could easily work through the whole book in a couple of nights. They’re level of playing cannot help but increase if they do so. It would make a very good first series of lessons for a new player.

I’ve spent over a month working through the book over and over and my strumming is becoming more polished. I thank the author for raising the level of my playing with his simple methods. There’s no reason to believe I won’t be going through the book four or five times and still picking up little bits here and there. Music, the more you learn the more you don’t know…

4 Stars Excellent book for EXTREME beginners
First off, I’d like to say don’t buy this if you already know a few chords. This book is for people who have never strummed a guitar before and in that capacity it is a great resource. This book teaches you how to tune your guitar, restring your guitar and basic methods on how to make chords work for you. The CD that comes with it helps you listen to see if what you’re playing is correct which is very helpful for people just starting out or for the tone-deaf among us. You also learn what power chords are, which if you have an electric guitar, these are fun to play with. I would highly recommend this for those just starting out playing the guitar.

But if you’re like me and you already know a decent many chords and only want a book that teaches you various modern worship songs, don’t buy this. Most of these worship songs I’ve never even heard of.

So all in all, an excellent resource for those who have never taken a lesson, and don’t know what a chord is.

5 Stars WOW – Immediate Success
I hate books that tie you up with notes and technical stuff. This book was totally different! With in the first day I was playing praise and worship songs that rock! I just started playing guitar and this has been the biggest help so far out of all my books, tapes etc… I also have started to write my own songs using this book. It is a must for anyone like me who wants to get a jump start and not have to jump hurdles.

5 Stars No more lame strum patterns
This book is great. I bought it about 6-9 months ago along with a couple of other guitar books. When I first looked through it, I thought it was a bit basic for my needs. Thank God I took the time to pick it up again the other day. This book doesn’t just teach you chords, it teaches you how to PLAY those chords. Not just STRUM STRUM STRUM, but actual strum patterns. This makes a HUGE difference in your musicianship.

I see this is called “Book 1″ and don’t see a book 2, I sure hope one is in the works.

Drawback? The only thing is, you probably won’t recognize any of the original worship songs in the book. But that’s OK… learn what’s in there and apply it to the songs you love and you’ll be thrilled with your ability to play.

This ISN’T just for people who want to learn worship music. If you’re not a Christian, this book will still benefit you greatly. Pick it up and start getting better now.

Brazilian jazz is the combination of the energizing rhythms of Brazilian and North American jazz music. Playing this style requires special skills not normally taught to the guitar student. This comprehensive book is designed to provide the guitarist with all that is necessary to understand and play Brazilian jazz such as chord structures, chord progressions, rhythms, decomposition, memorization, arranging, improvisation, notation, chord symbols and accompaniment as well as an overview and history of this coloful music. Solos are provided that implement various concepts and skills learned. They include: Amor Docy (Sweet Love); Passaciaille (Theme and First Variation); Bossa Barocco (Bossa Baroque); Bossa Improviso (Impromptu Bossa); Minuet (from “The Notebook of A.M. Bach); Choro Classic (Classical Choro); Choro Menor (Minor Choro); De Vez em Quando (Once in a While); Marcha Populaire (Folk March); Melodo de Lua (Moody Melody); Samba Sonolento (Sleepy Samba); Samba Feliz (Happy Samba); Sonhador (Day Dreamer); Amor Descuidado (Careless Love); Play the Bossa Nova; and Samba de Amor (Samba of Love).

4 Stars A Fine Primer for the Intermeditate Guitarist
If you have mastered the basics of nylon guitar fingerstyle playing, then this book will ease your musical journey into the world of Bossa Nova, Samba, Choro, and related South American styles. The book includes a very good chapter on how to read rhythm (probably the biggest challenge to newcomers of Brazilian style guitar), and chapters on chord construction and progressions. David Marshall’s writing style is informal and friendly. He covers some music theory — as it relates to the Brazilian guitar — in a comprehensible, non-intimidating manner. He includes numerous rhythmic examples written in standard notation and tab, along with a CD to help you learn those difficult patterns. The latter half of the book consists of fifteen solos written in standard notation only (no tab). The solos range from moderate-beginner to intermediate in difficulty.

For anyone interested in pursuing the Brazilian jazz style, “The Brazilian Guitar Book” by Nelson Faria is a good place to continue after working through the Marshall book. Faria’s instruction is more comprehensive, but geared more towards the advanced-intermediate guitar player.

I was very impressed with the well-structured layout of “Learn to Play Jazz Guitar”. Marshall obviously loves this type of guitar playing, and manages to convey his enthusiasm and expertise to the reader. Studying from this book is almost comparable to attending private lessons with a competent Brazilian guitarist. Highly recommended.

4 Stars Title should be “Learn to play Classical style Brazilian Jazz Guitar”.
This is follow up to Russell’s fine review.

I’m a jazz and classically trained guitarist who has been teaching for 12+ years. Every year our studio gets a fair number of students that list learning Brazilian guitar as one of the styles they are interested in. I finally broke down and bought this book a year ago hoping I could recommend it to those students (at the time there weren’t any helpful reviews on Amazon I could use to determine which method book would fill that need). While this book is very thorough, those who would benefit most from it would be intermediate classical guitarists looking to learn to play Brazillian style guitar.

One thing I would have liked to have seen less of is his arrangements which are mostly classical guitar pieces with Brazilian jazz style rhythms. Had he provided more traditional Brazilain pieces I would have given this book 5 stars.

Hopefully soon someone will come out with a good beginners Brazlian guitar book that features examples and songs that are authentically Brazillian.

5 Stars Pretty cool stuff to play around with…
The complete book on Jazz rhythm… It is definitely an in-depth study on all there is with jazz rhythm, while almost. It has so many variations and chord substitutions that will keep you busy for years. I especially love the chord voicing. The chords are rootless and or played on the upper light strings, (strings 4 down to 1). That is the best location for comping along with a bass players and or piano players or for expressing the melody or for chord soloing style.

The patterns are 4 bars or so in length and Larry gives you indications as to where they can be placed as substitutions for the original arrangement. This will allow you to add variety to any arrangement.

An additional usage I found helpful is to start creating improvised lines over the patterns or in between them as fills to spark up your comping. I am not that good with it yet, but I am getting better. The key is to comp the first chord on beats 1 and 2 and then add mini fill for beats 3 and 4 and even on 1 and 2 for the next bar before playing the next chord in the pattern. To get a ideas of this playing, check out players like Joe Pass, Herb Ellis’ style of comping; then take any pattern from this book and try to mimic their style of playing.

But for you beginners, you will love this book for the simple reason that it will have you creating professional sounding arrangements, intros and ending. Pretty cool stuff in here, man

5 Stars An ideal instructional that is confidently recommended
Jazz is the authentically American music form that had its beginnings in the brothels of New Orleans and evolved to become an established musical genre appreciated and supported around the world. Larry McCabe draws upon his many years of experience and expertise as the author of more than eighty published instructional music books for children and adults to present “101 Uptown Jazz Chord Progressions With Guitar Chord Frames”, a spiral bound collection of jazz progressions for the guitar. specific fingers called chord frames are presented, along with blank music staves for each progression so that aspiring jazz guitarists wanting to write, perform, record, or teach melodies, licks, solos, and bass lines can do so with a professional competence. Of special note are the ‘Suggested projects for Students” and the accompanying CD which includes all 101 progressions covering two-five-one, four-bar, eight-bar opening; sections, as well as eight-bar bridges, twelve-bar blues, sixteen-bar, and turnarounds. “101 Uptown Jazz Chord Progressions With Guitar Chord Frames” is an ideal instructional that is confidently recommended for dedicated and aspiring jazz guitarists alike!

4 Stars Excellent basic licks book
I disagree with the individual that rated this book as a run of the mill licks book. I have a lot of licks books, too, and this one is definitely better than most. Artie’s material, while mostly basic, is very useful in that it shows how even basic licks, when used tastefully, can make for excellent music. Most lick books just present static licks that may or may not have any relation to one another. Artie puts this material together in a way you can use musically and build on it to create your own music. My only criticism is that he goes through it all pretty quickly and it’s sometimes hard to tell exactly where he is in the tab, but that’s pretty minor. This book is really great when used along with Happy and Artie’s Jam Along Blues dvd’s. This book/dvd is definietly the best one I have for overall usefulness musically.

5 Stars Great Book!!
I’ve been playing for about four years, and I found this book and CD incredibly helpful. No fluff or unecessary information. Artie Traum has a gentle and non-egotistical style, and he explains the riffs simply and thoughtfully and then plays them. I read along in the book, then stopped the CD and played them myself. I found the riffs fun and even more fun when I could use the “building blocks” to build my own riffs. I highly recommend the book, especially considering the low price.

2 Stars Just Another Riff Book
I have about seven years on the guitar and am always looking for new material to study. I ordered this book, flipped through it a few times, and put it on the shelf with about twenty other books that cover the exact same ground. Just your generic, run-of-the-mill, riff collection. The majority of the riffs are just scale runs in different keys! I suppose if you’re just getting started and looking for blues/rock ideas this may work (though there are thousands of these types of books out there).

5 Stars This is a must have for beginning to advanced guitar
Artie does an excellent job in giving a blue collar description of essential guitar riffs for the acoustic guitar. I got a great deal out of it and I have been playing for 23 years. Well worth the investment. CD comes with it and helps the learning process greatly. A++

Classic country guitar solos book by Larry McCabe

If you love the sound of a twangy, chicken-picked vintage Telecaster or Stratocaster guitar and want to learn the exciting lead guitar style associated with classic truck driving songs, drinking songs, and cheating songs, this book is for you. (The book is not for beginners; basic picking and chording skills are required before attempting these solos.)

The solos in this book sound like the breaks one might hear on classic country recordings by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, and similar artists who defined the exciting honky-tonk sound of the 50s to late 60s, before rampant commercialism eliminated virtually all originality and feeling from popular country music.

Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to many songs. A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was played over each progression. The result is an authentic-sounding collection of 25 country guitar solos through which various ideas can be analyzed. An ambitious and creative guitarist will find many opportunities for applying these ideas to real songs.

The book could have been named Learn Bakersfield Lead Country Guitar Solos (or something like that). The twangy, Fender Telecaster country guitar style actually emerged in Bakersfield, California, in the 1950s. With a 50s Tele (Telecaster) or 60s Tele (Telecaster) guitar and a vintage Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp, the Bakersfield Sound country musicians and bandleaders like Don Rich, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Roy Nichols, Lefty Frizzel, Red Simpson, Wynn Stewart, and others would eventually teach the Nashville guitar pickers a good deal about chicken picking and twangy country lead guitar playing.

Please note: This book is a 2007 reprint of Larry McCabe’s Country Lead Guitar, formerly published by Mel Bay Publications.

2 Stars easy to play, awful to sing
While these songs are relatively easy to play for beginning guitarists, I bought the book so I could play and sing with my young son. Except for a couple of the songs, I found the key the songs were written in made them very hard to sing.

4 Stars Well written and chosen children’s songs for beginners
This is a good collection of easy to play songs, definitely appropriate for kids under 10. Worth checking out.

1 Star horrible
All songs are transmographied, nothing sounds like the original.

I need my money back.

4 Stars Useful for beginners
I’m very much a beginning guitarist and this book is well within my range. It offers some fairly easy to play melodies and the songs are some that my own children recognize and can sing, making it enjoyable for all of us. If you’re looking for a book to stretch your guitar skills, this isn’t it, but if you just want to learn some fun songs your children might like too, this is great!

5 Stars Great book!
This is really a great idea, and well executed. My 8-year-old daughter has really enjoyed it, and has learned just about all the songs. Learning folk songs they already know and enjoy is a good way to get younger kids started. The book provides easy-to-read tablature in addition to standard notation so they can play the melodies, and chord symbols so they can practice their rhythm chops as well. The songs require only a few chords, and are simple to play. It includes a reasonable range of keys with chords easier to play — there are none of those F chords that are hard for little hands to master! I’ve had a blast playing the chords while she plays the melody and vice versa. Even if you can play just a little bit of guitar, you can have a great experience with your child. The companion CD adds another level of instruction, so the child can hear the music. This is another fine product from String Letter Publishing — I’ve found their products to be at a consistently high standard.

Comb-bound electric slide guitar instruction book and CD.

TAB – STANDARD NOTATION – CD

This superb electric slide book teaches how to play open tuning slide guitar with a blues band and singer. It is the only slide (or bottleneck) guitar instruction book devoted to learning how to play slide behind a blues vocalist.

The term slide guitar refers to a style of playing in which the guitar strings are fretted with a piece of metal, glass or ceramic. Usually, the fretting device is a finger sized cylinder (the slide) that is worn on either the third or fourth finger of the fretting hand. Bottleneck blues guitar players have been known to play bottleneck blues guitar with makeshift items such as knife blades, bones, and spoon handles.

Slide guitar is also known as bottleneck guitar or knife guitar. Slide guitar setup: A guitar used for slide playing is usually tuned to an open chord; the strings are raised at the nut to accommodate the pressure of the slide.

A fill-in is a lead guitar lick played behind a singer. This slide guitar guide teaches 101 authentic slide guitar fill-ins in open E tuning. Songs are presented in a way that makes learning efficient, enjoyable, and pertinent to real music.

For your convenience, all of the songs are performed in open E tuning, allowing you to jam with the entire CD without having to retune. After absorbing the licks, apply them to songs of your own choice.

Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sporting Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, and several new songs based on standard blues changes.
