Learning To Play The Guitar – Lesson Three – Tabs

by Carol on August 29, 2008

I’m quite getting into this guitar-learning stuff; I was looking forward to getting into Free Lesson 3 – How to Read Acoustic Guitar Tabs. Ooh, Spooky! I felt like the mysteries of the universe were going to be revealed to me. I had a whole 2 hours before I had to be somewhere else.

But sometimes reality just laughs in your face. This was one of Those Days. It isn’t paranoia when something really is out to get you!

I was just about to grab my guitar and get started when the fridge died. Just like that. Instead of humming comfortingly in the corner as usual, it gave a strangled crack and stopped. When I opened it, there was so much ice in there we could have had a resident Yeti and not noticed. (Come to think of it, that would explain where all the Triple Cream Cheese went. It couldn’t possibly have been me who ate it. Looks like we have a fat Yeti.)

The fridge is old-fashioned. And temperamental – if you don’t defrost it, it goes on strike. I gazed longingly at my guitar lesson, sighed and got started on placating the fridge. Emptied it, defrosted it with boiling water, scrubbed it inside and out, while murmuring soothing words. It eventually started again – grudgingly – 2 hours later. That was it. Free time used up – client banging on the door. Reality.

I picked up the guitar again at 10pm that night. I was determined to do lesson 3!
I was always hopeless at reading music at school; those black dots with tails never did make sense to me. But this guitar notation – “TAB” as it’s called for short – was really user friendly, and the diagrams given made it quite clear where you were meant to put your fingers. I felt really pleased with myself by the time I’d read the theory through – and you can download examples on video with this lesson.

I picked and plucked my way to the end of the lesson, and felt I’d really made progress. Jimi Hendrix move over!

All the best,

Carol J Pearson
