How To Read Guitar Tabs – Lesson Four
How to Play the Guitar Lesson 4 was quite short, which is always good news for me. This lesson (still free, believe it or not!), was about how to actually read the guitar Tabs notation and then how to transfer it into music.
At first glance it looked quite scary, but once I started reading it and holding my guitar and poking the bits it said to poke – it worked! I was really quite amazed that dozy little me was able to work it out because, although things go into my head quite easily, making them come out of my fingers is another matter entirely!
When I was young my mother’s heart was set on me learning ballet. However my feet naturally pointed the wrong way because of my horse-riding. Makes your toes turn in. Whereas ballet dancers’ toes need to point out. Oops! My dancing teacher despaired of me very quickly and explained to my mother that ballet lessons for me were a complete waste of her time and my mum’s money While she could make the instructions go into my head, she could not make them come out at my feet!
I was fairly certain that the guitar lesson would be the same, so I was indeed pleasantly surprised when I picked up my guitar and was able to work out what string I should be picking, and where I needed to put the fingers of my other hand.
It doesn’t seem quite so complicated when it is carefully explained that the long arm of the guitar is called a fretboard and is divided into different segments (frets); the strings are numbered one to six, with one being the top one, and all the Tab tells you to do is where to put the fingers of your left hand and what string to pluck with your right hand.
The noise I made was actually quite pleasant. The dog continued to lie quietly under my desk instead of running away howling – which is what he used to do when I was trying to play the guitar. By the end of this lesson I could figure out where to put my fingers to play a chord. Way to go!
All the best,
